School Essay-USA not the Best
Melyssa Kennedy
So many people refer to the United States of America as the greatest country in the world. Who are the ones saying that? That's right, mainly Americans themselves. They think that the rights to free speech, start a business, and bear arms are the liberating reasons for making USA the best. But there are many underlying reasons to dispute that claim outright. There are many things about the United States that make other countries far better places to live.
The USA's consumption of non-renewable resources is staggering. Non-renewable resources are those resources that once used, cannot be remade, regrow

The thylacine, sometimes referred to as the Tasmanian wolf or Tasmanian tiger, was, in fact, neither a wolf nor a tiger. It was a carnivorous marsupial. It became extinct in 1938 from overhunting, but thrived on the Tasmanian island for thousands of years. They were social creatures, living in small groups. They had a very unique anatomy, similar to a

Consumerism Essay for Class
Melyssa Kennedy 11/2008
These days we, as a society, are generally ruled by one thing: consumerism. We constantly buy this and that, these and those, always on the prowl for the next best item. We compete with each other unknowingly, and sometimes consciously, to have the best everything. But what many of us don't yet realize is that consumerism will eventually destroy our natural ways of life, the ways in which we are all accustomed to and the processes by which we proceed through each day, by corrupting us inside and out.
To go on with our everyday lives and to create all the goods we deem necessi

How Much Individual Agency Do We Have?
How Much Indiviadual Agency Can We Possible Have in Such An Consumer Society As the One in Which We Now Live?
Melyssa Kennedy
Whether or not people have individual agency in today's consumer society largely depends on their surroundings, especially while they are growing up. When one grows up with excess money, money exceeding the amount to purchase the basics, they become accustomed to getting want they want rather quickly- whereas one who grows up with tight monetary earnings may be more disciplined in their spending habits. The amount of exposure to advertisements and what type of people one admires also play large roles in how much ind

Cetaceans: the only mammal fully-equipped to a life in the sea

Many people, in fact most people, think of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, collectively known as cetaceans, as always have been being purely sea-dwelling animals. Some even think they are fish. However, they are nothing like fish, other than the fact that they live in water and use tails for locomotion. Fish have horizontal tail fins and swing their tail from side to side, and cetaceans have horizontal flukes and move their tails up and down. Fish have lacy fins, cetaceans have fleshy flippers. Fish breath with gills behind their heads and can smell, cetaceans

A Series of Unfortunate Misunderstandings
Tom invited an old high school friend of his that happened to work at the same warehouse as he to supper at his mother Amanda's suggestion. She wanted to "hook up" her daughter with Jim. Jim also happened to be the man Laura had a crush on in high school. What a coincidence. Jim and Laura had talked back in the day but did not date. Laura was far too shy. It was a surprise to her that the Jim Tom had invited to dinner was the same Jim that called her "Blue Roses" back in high school. I wonder if Jim would have shown up if Tom had mentioned his main intention inviting Jim over for sup

Effie Paints Us Her Mourning Picture
Melyssa Kennedy
Effie, the little girl who had died, recalls how her life was like when she was alive in the first stanza of the poem "Mourning Picture". She specifies details about the chair they carry- it was mahogany, and their house type- it was clapboard. These, along with other specifics, seem to suggest she remembers how her life was very specifically when she was alive. It conveys a longing to have life like that again. Of course, she cannot, but that does not mean she won't fret over her own early, tragic death, and cry in spirit at the ultimate price she has paid. Effie has died and lon
